Lifesavers
In my 50's, two women saved my life- figuratively at least. One was an long-time friend, and the other was new to me but has become a lifelong friend. I sure never thought I'd find myself unemployed and not sure where to turn career-wise, but life has surprises. I left my denominational minister role when the kids were in high school- too much travel and I kept missing their big moments. I thought some of the local congregations would snap me up as their pastor, but that didn't happen. It's a twisted sordid tale.
So after an interim pastorate ended, and another congregation took a pass, I started substitute teaching. I had some longer term assignments, and enjoyed it more than I expected. The school eventually started paying retirement but not health insurance. We were on the Affordable Care Act, but Doug had pre-existing conditions and at one time we were paying $1300 a month for health care. It was clear I needed a job with health insurance.
My long-time friend had begun working at the nearby university pediatric division of child and community health, and reached out to me when there was a job opening. I think her coaching helped me get the job. Half-time employment qualifies for full-time benefits at the university, and we relaxed with excellent coverage for the whole family. Doug was so grateful he stepped up at home to help out. I also found I enjoyed the work- it wasn't just for the health insurance as I thought it would be.
Both friends saw my skills and abilities and offered me opportunities to advance as they were able. I eventually became full-time and my supportive boss has put in for career advancements for me twice, which really helps the salary and benefits as well.
This isn't where I thought I would be in my early 60's. Honestly, I don't remember having a career plan, I just kept doing the next thing. And interesting things kept coming to me. I think church leaders were providing leadership opportunities so I would serve as a leader for the broader church. It was difficult to stay on that track with the farm and family, and it's clear which I chose.
And I am so grateful for those two women.
